At Fallen Timber Furniture, our process is designed to bridge the gap between vision and reality. Whether you are selecting a refined design from our Signature Collection or commissioning a one-of-a-kind Custom Furniture, we embark on a collaborative journey from the initial design phase to delivery. Building bespoke pieces designed for the life you lead, and the generations that follow.
Wood types
We work with a wide range premium domestic hardwoods such as - Ash, White Oak, Walnut and more
ASH
Ash is very light. Ranging from a creamy white to a pale tan. It has a bold, porous grain that is very tactile. Making it great for stain application.
With an Oil Finish: When you apply a natural oil, Ash takes on a warm, buttery glow. Because the grain is so open, the oil penetrates deeply, highlighting the "cathedral" patterns in the wood. It’s perfect for a Scandi or modern aesthetic where you want lightness without losing the organic feel of wood.
Janka Hardness: 1,320 lbf.
White oak
It typically features a light-to-medium brown color with olive undertones. It’s famous for its medullary rays those beautiful "fleck" patterns you see in quartersawn pieces.
With an Oil Finish: Oil-based finishes make White Oak look incredibly "rich.” It shifts from a raw, dusty tan to a deep, golden honey. It can look clean in a modern kitchen or rugged and "Old World" in a rustic library. It is the hardest of these three, making it the best choice for high-traffic surfaces.
Janka Hardness: 1,360 lbf
WALNUT
Naturally, it ranges from a dark chocolate brown to a soft “reddish" hue. It often features highly figured grain, including swirls, burls, and "crotch" patterns where branches meet the trunk.
With an Oil Finish: This is where Walnut truly shines. It darkens significantly and becomes the centerpiece of any room. Note that while it’s the most expensive, it is also softer of these three.

FINISHES
We use a non-toxic, plant-based oil from a trusted partner with over 60 years of experience making wood finishes. We let the wood do the talking. Our natural finish highlights every grain and detail throughout the wood.
Prefer something warmer or moodier? Our Signature Stains are curated to complement your space without losing the soul of the wood. All stains can be viewed in person at our showroom, which is complimentary with every piece, whether from our Signature Collection or a fully custom commission.
Need to match an existing piece or ongoing project? We partner with a professional finishing company right here in Calgary that specializes in custom color and stain matching, ensuring your new piece fits seamlessly into your space.
THE SIGNATURE COLLECTION
The Signature Collection features our most sought-after designs. Refined pieces that have become staples of the Fallen Timber aesthetic. While these are established forms, they are never mass-produced. Every commission is built-to-order by Founder & Lead Craftsman Nathan Keen, utilizing premium domestic hardwoods and architectural steel to fit the specific needs of your space.

Every commission begins with a conversation. We work with you to select the ideal Signature design from our collection and finalize the details to fit your interior.
Design & Dimensions: Tailoring the piece to your specific floor plan and seating requirements.
Material Selection: Choosing between premium White Oak, Black Walnut, or Ash.
Preliminary Estimate: We provide an initial cost and timeline to ensure the project aligns with your expectations..

This is where your vision takes shape. Once you have reviewed the estimate and wish to move forward -
We translate our conversation into 3D Renderings to refine proportions and design. Because these are established designs, we move efficiently from approval into production.
Detailed 3D Renderings: Visualizing the final piece to ensure every detail is resolved.
Showroom & Shop Visit: Local clients are invited to our Calgary shop / showroom to review wood samples, see the workshop, and see "where the magic happens."
50% Initial Payment: This deposit secures your place in our studio queue. And we begin sourcing your timber.

With the design locked in, fabrication begins at our Calgary shop. We combine traditional joinery with modern precision to build furniture that lasts for generations.
Process Updates: You aren't left in the dark. We provide regular updates as your piece moves through the building process
Hand-Applied Finishes: We use non-toxic, plant-based oils from a partner with over 60 years of manufacturing wood finishes.
White-Glove Delivery: For ALL of our projects, we personally deliver and install your piece to ensure your furniture is placed exactly where it belongs
